County band keeping busy

The Hawaii County Band’s remaining schedule for 2015 includes three Mooheau Bandstand concerts and at least three holiday parades.

The bandstand performance times and dates are:

• Noon on Oct. 10

• Noon on Nov. 14

• Noon on Dec. 5

The band is scheduled to march in the Hilo Christmas Parade on Nov. 28, Pahoa Holiday Parade on Dec. 5 and the Keaau Christmas Parade on Dec. 12.

Rummage sale to help heroes

Hilo’s Hidden Heroes, a group of caregivers who support disabled veterans, is hosting a rummage sale starting at 7 a.m. Saturday in the parking lot of the Hilo Vet Center, 70 Lanihuli St.

There will be gently used household goods, clothing and various sundries.

There also will be food (baked goods, beverages, etc.) for sale, keiki activities and a raffle.

All proceeds will benefit the caregivers of disabled veterans in Hilo.

Puna Hongwanji bazaar Saturday

Puna Hongwanji Mission will host its annual bazaar from 8 a.m.-noon Saturday at 16-492 Old Volcano Road in Keaau.

The fun fundraising event will feature clothing and housewares in the rummage sale, lau lau and bread in the food market, bagged cinders in the landscape area, farm fresh vegetables and a silent auction.

There will not be a plant sale this year.

Donation needs include rice, mochi rice flour, butter, nishime konbu, Hawaiian salt, shoyu, brown sugar and bottled water.

BISAC hosting event in Puna

The Big Island Substance Abuse Council invites the public to its Puna Fall Fest from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Friday at Pahoa High and Intermediate School to celebrate community and strength.

BISAC’s free event will include fun family entertainment, giveaways, games and food.

“Pahoa has been through some challenging times in the past year and we at BISAC want to celebrate them,” said Dr. Hannah Preston-Pita, the organization’s CEO.

BISAC also is collecting donated items for therapy kits to make changes in the lives of abused children and young victims of domestic violence.
